Happy 70th Birthday John!

John turned 70 on Friday and Jules flew over to the UK to celebrate with him and the rest of the family.  Apparently John is still as naughty as ever - hooray!!

Lovely family shot

Obligatory birthday celebration at Pizza Express.  Tess and Tom were very jealous.

Tom had to be at school early on Saturday morning because he was chosen to participate in filming for a commercial that promotes a literacy product that his school uses.  He was at school for 5 hours filming so we're hoping he might make it into the commercial even if only for a second!  Meanwhile Tess had basketball at their home ground and her team had a very convincing win.

 Good defending!

Tom has struggled settling into his new school which I find upsetting.  He doesn't like the "naughty" boys that mess around and cause the entire class to miss out on privileges and I suspect he misses the girls too as they always used to look after him: "Tom, you're supposed to be doing this, Tom have you handed in your work, Tom would you like me to do your cutting out for you".  You get the picture!  One day he said that part of the problem was he hadn't had a play with any of his new classmates so I jumped on this because that's an easy problem to fix.  Last weekend we had one friend round on Saturday and they went to the rugby together and this weekend I arranged for his best friend, Nate (what an auspicious name!), to spend Sunday with us.  The boys spent 3 hours happily in the surf together down at Manly followed by the afternoon at home on the Xbox.  I suspect we'll be seeing quite a bit more of Nate.

And I'm working at the moment, 4 days a week in the City, which presents its own set of logistical challenges.  Tom is very vocal that he doesn't like me working.  Tess is understanding as it has less impact on her in terms of after-school activities.  I am conflicted.  I love working: using my brain, being treated like an intelligent adult, earning money(!), but there's no doubt that it places a strain on the family and I wonder if contracting is worse because I don't have the support structure in place.  I'm not sure what the answer is.
