Asthma Attack

Early monday morning I rushed Tom to A&E because he was having difficulty breathing, was listless and was rolling his eyes.  I got waved straight through the waiting room to a bed where Tom was promptly hooked up to all sorts of monitors and given oxygen.  It turns out he was having an asthma attack but having no experience of this we didn't recognise it and had been giving him all the worst sorts of drugs you can give in that situation!  The doctors managed to get his breathing a little bit more under control but decided to send him to a nearby hospital which has a proper paediatric unit.  Tom was transferred there in an ambulance which he would have been much more excited about if he hadn't been so sick!  Once there we got seen by several more doctors in A&E and eventually were transferred to a ward.  The hospital is built on a cliff top with the most stunning views of the sea and we had a window bed which was very pleasant.

By the second day the novelty was beginning to wear off and Tom was beginning to get more and more distressed about being in hospital especially after a couple of nurses physically restrained him to give him his puffer even though he had been so good about having it.  At 4 pm on the Tuesday I went up to the nurses on duty and demanded to be allowed to leave because of Tom's increasing distress.  After a lot of huffing and puffing (get it?!) we were given all the necessary drugs and treatment plans and we literally ran out of the hospital.  The moment we got outside Tom was back to normal dancing around and cracking jokes!  I took him to see our local GP today who said that Tom is still quite wheezy which is not good but he is definitely fine to fly (we had originally been threatened with having to cancel our UK trip).  So, armed with a ridiculous number of drugs we will be getting on QF31 tomorrow afternoon for the 24 hour trip to the UK - hooray!
