I have had a fantastic birthday week with dinner out on Tuesday night with my lovely girlfriends Leanne, Alayne and Angie - they gave me Nigella Bites for my birthday which completes my Nigella collection! On Thursday night we had a special birthday dinner - lasagne cooked by me and a birthday cake very kindly cooked by Lisa - you can see the different ways in which Tess and Tom enjoyed their pieces of cake. Alex was still here which added to the party atmosphere and he gave me a beautiful pair of Dinosaur Design salad servers in the perfect red to match my kitchen - Jules was very perplexed because he hadn't yet realised I had a red "thing" going on with the kitchen!!!
We had a very "proud parent" moment on Thursday. During the week we had received a letter from the headmaster of Tess' school inviting us to attend a special assembly during which Tess would receive an award that she didn't know about. Jules went along and Tess got given an award for "Writing excellent sentences"!! She went up on stage to receive her award looking like a complete ragamuffin - I really must sort out her hair - but she was very proud of herself and so were we.
Friday was an odd day weather wise with the day very hot and humid which made everyone feel just a little lethargic. Leanne and Alayne spent the morning at my house as it was still too wet outside to take the kids to the park. I took the opportunity to prepare dinner for Saturday night and it was just as well I did because the Reids and the Mennies ended up at our house in the evening drinking first tea and rapidly moving onto wine and beer so we were all grateful that I had a big pot of curry ready and waiting on the stove - it felt like a further extension of my birthday week!

Saturday evening was sadly Alex's last dinner but because I felt extremely guilty about not being able to find a babysitter so that we could take him out for dinner we saw him out in style at home with the most perfectly cooked eye fillet steak - Jules kept holding pieces of steak up to the candlelight to marvel at how well he had done - chocolate mousse, cheese and 3 bottles (?!) of our favourite Pinot Noir. Have you noticed there is a bit of an underlying food theme to all my blogs - it seems to be all I think about which is why I need to go walking every morning!
Jules had a race on Sunday afternoon and they did well - first over the line and first overall. Julia, Maggie and Ryan came round to keep us company and Tom was absolutely transfixed by the transformer toy that Ryan had - by a stroke of luck I have bought one for Tom for the flight so I'm fairly confident it will keep him occupied for at least 20 minutes! The countdown is on and Tess has drawn up a "How many sleeps to England" chart which she marks off each morning. For your amusement I have included Alex's favourite "Austin Powers-esque" photo of Jules barbecuing sausages last Monday evening!
