Break and Enter

The Jamiesons have just spent a long weekend with us up in Sydney which was brilliant although we will all need a good night's sleep tonight.  Jules and Jamo started off with the twilight on Friday which they ended up abandoning due to lack of wind.  Saturday was spent down at Little Manly beach enjoying the sunshine.  In the evening we went to a great Italian restaurant called Pendolino's in the city to celebrate my upcoming 40th birthday.  It was the perfect restaurant for me - amazing handmade pastas and lots of robust Italian red wine.  We ended up in trendy Zeta bar where Lisa and I hit the dance floor much to everyone else's embarrassment!

Tess had a one day Band Camp up at school on Sunday and I was there to help out.  It was so much fun seeing and hearing the enthusiasm of all these 8 year olds for their new musical instruments.  At the end of the day the Junior Band did a little concert playing Hot Cross Buns and Go Tell Aunt Nancy which was brilliant (relatively speaking - they have only been playing their instruments for 6 weeks!).  The others went for a swim at the Mennies and then it was everyone back to our house for a roast chicken dinner complete with yummy bread sauce.  About 10 minutes after the Mennies had left for the evening we got a call from Craig to say they were stuck in the lift and could someone come round to rescue them.  Julia and I jumped in the car and found the 5 of them stuck in the lift at which stage we wondered how long the air in there would last them!  We circled round the house and luckily found an open sliding door with just the fly screen locked.  I ran back to the lift to get permission to break the fly screen which Julia did very effectively.  The Mennies were rescued and there was the most beautiful orange full moon rising over the sea to reward us for our efforts.

Now that I've given up work I am occasionally trying to do things that I wouldn't normally do.  On Friday, coerced by Bella, I joined her and a group of her friends for a surf lesson.  I'm not ashamed to admit that I had been praying all morning that the lesson might be cancelled due to the very heavy rains the day before but no such luck.  We were kitted out in winter steamers, given huge foam surf boards and shown how to lie on the board, paddle and jump up once we'd caught a wave.  I am surprised to report that I managed to stand up (only once but it's enough!) and I actually really enjoyed myself.  So much so that I am going back for another lesson next Friday.  Tom is very dismissive of my efforts so I am going to have to prove to him that his mother's not completely hopeless!

The kids have been spending time in each others rooms after bedtime - mainly with Tess reading Tom stories although occasionally she lets him read her one and she listens patiently and helps him with the more difficult words - it's very sweet.  I went into Tess' room late one evening and found that they'd both fallen asleep in the same bed - I hope they continue to enjoy each other's company this much.
