Tom went into hospital again on Wednesday to get his arm straightened - although the young doctor had done a good job on Saturday his boss felt that the arm could be straighter. I was promised a sleepy Tom on Wednesday afternoon after the general anaesthetic and the doctor said he should take the rest of the week off school.
The cast that's been put on now is much larger than the previous one, coming almost to his shoulder, and is much more solid. Tom seems incredibly comfortable with it - too comfortable as he's back to climbing trees, bundling with his friends and running around like a lunatic! The general had very little effect on him and he and I were fighting droids and storm troopers all Wednesday afternoon. After a day with him at the zoo on Thursday I suggested that perhaps he should go back to school on Friday but he kindly reminded me that the doctor had said he didn't need to go back until Monday!
On Friday afternoon we headed down to a local park to catch up with the kids and mums from both Tom's and Tess' classes. Tom enjoyed being a celebrity after not having seen his mates all week, Tess enjoyed climbing trees with her girlfriends and I enjoyed sitting in the sunshine chatting. We had to make a swift departure as Tess had a piano concert at her teacher's house which went very well. The concert started with Tess' teacher and husband playing the accordion and mouth-organ respectively. Tom was transfixed by the mouth-organ and I wonder whether we might be investing in one soon.
The Rumbolds came to pick Tom up on Saturday to take him to watch the Waratahs play rugby. The three boys had a fantastic time and John and Leanne looked a little weary upon their return! Meanwhile Tess was at a netball development day followed by a sleepover party. Tess isn't great on sleepovers and was vowing she'd be home for the night from this one but the general excitement got the better of her and she lasted the whole night through.
Jules believes that all children should have bunk beds at some stage in their lives and I just happened to find some that I liked last week. Some people might say that introducing bunk beds at the same time as a broken arm is not entirely sensible especially when the bunk beds are in Tom's room! However, we felt that it was some sort of compensation for having to delay Fiji and for Tom not being able to do any sport for 12 weeks. The minute we bought them the arguments about who was going to sleep at the top started until I had a flash of inspiration and turned the bottom bunk into a secret cave by hanging up old muslin curtains. Both kids are very happy sleeping in either bunk now and so we can introduce our weekly rotation without any complaints.

I'd like to annoyingly point out that we went to watch the Sharks play rugby, but they happened to be beaten, on this occasion, by the Waratahs (a sore point for all their fans). xx
