Lucky me that my 50th fell on a Saturday so I was able to make a whole weekend of celebrations.
We went to Hugo's on Friday night as a family. I'm very cautious of not interfering with the kid's social lives and thought Friday would be a better day for them. It was such a wonderful evening - it's the first time Tess has been since she's been 18 so she was able to get stuck into the cocktails. Jules and I thought a second bottle of wine followed by a glass of red and a sticky were a good idea so we felt a little the worse for wear on Saturday. In fact my first port of call on my birthday was the Pharmacy for some Alka Seltzer!
Saturday was a busy day with Tess at work until mid afternoon and Jules on patrol (Tom skived off due to being on crutches) so we didn't get to open cards and presents until about 4 pm and then it was a mad rush to get ready for our dinner at Cafe Sydney with Craig and Lisa. The weather had been horrendous all day (situation normal this year in Sydney) but we were so lucky that it started to clear up just as we left the beaches and we ended up having the most glorious evening which was wonderful as a large part of the charm of Cafe Sydney is the view.
On Sunday I ran around doing my chores in the morning and then it was off to Hugo's (again but it really is such a great place!) for a girls long lunch. We started at Kate's with champagne and the gorgeous girl had baked me a delicious cake! Again we were incredibly lucky with the weather and we had the most amazing afternoon - it really was perfect. I made a little speech and then all the girls made a little speech remembering how we'd all met and there were lots of tears but they were happy ones - helped along by a few Lychee Mees!! I could not have asked for a better 50th celebration.
Tom and I went to see an experienced orthopaedic surgeon for a check up (the one we saw at the hospital was very junior) and we discovered that in fact his foot is not broken but he does have another fibrous dysplasia tumour. The surgeon doesn't think it's worth doing anything about it but we're going to run a few more tests just to check it's all ok. He recommended that Tom doesn't do any jumping from great heights because there is obviously a risk it could break. Tom was delighted to be out of the moon boot and off the crutches just in time for school holidays.
We were all supposed to be heading over to the UK for Easter but covid and the ridiculous Australian border restrictions put paid to that so we've moved our family trip to June/July. However, Jules decided to head off for a week and a half as it's been much longer for him since he's seen his family.
