....because we eat chickens too" - quote of the week from Tess.
You will remember that I wasn't hugely supportive of Jules doing "dry July" in last weeks blog. I'm glad to say that on Friday evening, with a house full of people, he decided to follow my advice and only do "dry July" during the week - yippee - our weekends were in danger of being extremely boring!
On Saturday morning, the rain abated for the first time in about 2 weeks, and we decided to attack the garden. Jules' and my style of gardening is to rip everything out about twice a year and not do anything else in between. It's actually quite therapeutic being armed with secateurs and a saw and the kids are great at carrying all the big branches up to the front of the house for us to put in a trailer and take to the tip. We were just wondering how much else to rip out when Julia, Michael, Ryan and Maggie arrived in their brand new Subaru Forrester which is very smart. It's got a special camera that automatically comes on when you're reversing so that you can see what's behind you - I need one of those. We had a break for coffee and biscuits and then decided that we might as well do lunch at the same time so we fired up the barbie and it was bacon sarnies all round - just like being at the farm. After lunch Jules managed to persuade Michael and Craig to help him fill the trailer whilst I took Tom to Charlie Rumbold's 3rd birthday party.
Leanne is a very good friend of mine and her Friday's are free too so we always meet up - in the park if weather permits or at my house if not. Given it was Charlie's party on Saturday Leanne had some serious baking to do and turned up at my house with a suitcase and several bags full of equipment and ingredients. She proceeded to bake three cakes and some cup cakes for the kids - very impressive. Tom and Charlie played in the backyard and we got fed up of running downstairs with things for them so Leanne devised a bucket and rope system which worked very well. Leanne is very creative and for Charlie's party had all the 3 year olds "spray-dying" their own singlets (creative or crazy?!) which we were given to take home with instructions on what to do - don gloves, wash out singlet, wash singlet until it runs clear.........Tom's is still in the plastic bag as I write!!
Tom and I got back from the party at 4.15 and it was a mad rush to get the house ready and dinner cooked as we had Angie, Liam and Oscar coming for dinner. We haven't seen them all since January and it was brilliant to catch up. The kids played downstairs on their own, peacefully for the first 1.5 hours and it was almost like being young and kid free again!
After spending most of Sunday morning in the house playing lego, doing craft and baking brownies the kids were going crazy so we put on gum boots and took them out for a very long bush walk - they walked all the way which was fantastic although I regretted not having a camera with me when Tom did a total face plant in a muddy puddle - when he got up all you could see was the white of his eyes!
Jules and I discovered the "genius" button in iTunes this week and have spent hours and hours using it to create new playlists. It's amazing what a time waster all this social media is these days - I spend about 30 mins every Monday catching up on the 5 blogs that I'm currently following and I'm horrified by the amount of time I spend playing ridiculous games on my iPhone. It's interesting that a lot of these media/devices are supposed to make you more efficient........
