Saturday was an incredibly exciting day for me as I attended a knife skills course with our friends Julia and Michael. The course was run by an Australian (presumably chef) who spends a lot of time in Japan and fancies himself as a bit of a wit. The course was excellent, I only cut myself once and I came away with a beautiful new knife which I'm actually a bit scared to use - I think I need some more practice - julienned carrots anyone?! We had a quiet evening and after dinner the kids, Jules and I played Singstar together - Abba for the kids until Jules and I chucked them off to do some Duran Duran - followed by MicroMachines which is a fun car game, perfect for the children because if one car gets too far ahead the game restarts so it's not so obvious if someone is winning. This is very important in our house as Tom gets VERY upset if anyone beats him.
On Sunday we had our second session of nippers which again went better than expected except towards the end where a cut on Tess' knee caused her to refuse going in the sea. Ironically she is actually very good at all the relay races and the "wading" as she is tall so the surf doesn't bother her so much - Tom is desperate to do nippers but unfortunately is too young (by 18 days!) and has to wait until next September for his turn. He still enjoys playing in the surf whilst Tess does her stuff and insisted on going for a quick swim in the ocean pool afterwards - he came out blue because we've had some pretty terrible weather recently and the sea hasn't had a chance to warm up yet.
Jules decided a while ago that he and I both need bikes so that the 4 of us can go cycling together - down to Manly for nippers for example - he seems to forget the steep hill on the way back! He spent some time researching in a bike shop yesterday and today went to another shop determined to come away with a shiny new bike. He sent me a text "you should see the cool new bike I've just bought - Tom will be so jealous!". It is a pretty cool bike and he was eager to get out immediately with the kids which unfortunately didn't go very well because of the hills - Tess managed the first really big hill but couldn't get up the second smaller one and ended up sulking in her bedroom swearing never to cycle again!
In the afternoon we went round to Duncan & Bella's to celebrate Iona's 2nd birthday. They've been working very hard on their new house and the garden is really looking fantastic. The kids love going there because they think it's a farm with the chickens, ducks, rabbits, dog, water dragons, turtles etc.
