Australia Day

I've had a 1 day working week this week which is definitely the way forward!  Wednesday was Australia Day and we woke to thick sea fog.  Undeterred we headed down to Manly beach for a quick swim but we couldn't see the surfers from the beach, the waves were huge, the bluebottles were out in force and Jules got stung so we didn't last very long.  At lunch time we went round to Liam and Angie's house for a bbq and a swim.  The kids spent 5 hours in the pool with a 5 minute break for a sausage sarnie, we had the most fabulous lamb and salad, the big boys played a very fierce game of table tennis in the 35 degree heat and even I went for a long swim in their pool (it's solar-heated so much more my type of temperature!).

The kids and I were due to hang out at Scotland Island on Friday but unfortunately Charlie fell jumping off the wharf and banged his head hard on some steps so got rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital and then on to Randwick Children's Hospital for further observation.  He's very lucky to have only sustained a nasty cut above the eye and a very bad bruise on his brain which is obviously not ideal but according to the doctors is in one of the "safest" places to have a bruise.

I took the girls to their tennis lesson on Friday morning and met the infamous Yudhi, their tennis coach whom they absolutely adore and I can see why.  He has the patience of a saint and is incredibly encouraging even when they're completely rubbish (note from Jules - he is also apparently very good looking and a great favourite of all the mums)!  I was amazed that after just 1 term of lessons they are able to have short rallies and do some approximation of a serve.  Whilst the girls had their lesson I played on the next door court with Tom who really shows some promise and I'm hoping he'll start lessons this year too.  In the afternoon the Mennie children came round and Olivia was with us for a playdate so I had a house full of children.  At one stage we all played "teachers" downstairs - even Darcy - which was a lot of fun but not surprisingly Tom ruined it by doing frog impersonations even though the "teacher" (Olivia) told him not too.  I hope that isn't indicative of what he will be like at school!!  As a result of Charlie still being in hospital John and Noah came round in the evening after having visited Charlie and stayed the night, as did Olivia, so I think we did quite well getting the kids in bed and asleep by 10.30.  The big boys were a different matter and stayed up drinking beer, listening to very loud music and singing along until 3am - just a few sore heads this morning (although mine is due to lack of sleep and their bad singing!!).

On Saturday evening we went round to Duncan and Bella's to celebrate Tenzin's birthday (and to wish Arthur and Barney happy birthday).  It's always difficult buying birthday presents so close after Christmas but I think we were onto a winner with a joint private scooter lesson for the 3 boys.  Alison and Clive are over from the UK at the moment so it was lovely to catch up with them too.

I've saved the best news for last which is that Nate and Sarah got engaged last weekend and will be getting married August/September this year - date and venue to be confirmed.  We are thrilled and of course it means we'll be going over to the UK to join in the celebrations.  Tess and Anna have been asked to be bridesmaids which is already causing much envy amongst Tess' friends and Tom and Sam are going to be "papermen" - Tom got a little confused but I think that's a fairly good derivative of pageboys!
