Dad arrives

My father arrived in Sydney on Friday to a glorious autumn day - he had the cheek to complain that it was hot so since Saturday it's been grey, overcast, much cooler with quite a bit of rain - he's now complaining about being cold!  In the lead up to Dad's arrival I had quite the kids bedrooms, bannisters and skirting boards repainted and my re-upholstered sofa delivered so the house was looking quite ship-shape.

It's been a big weekend with Lisa's surprise "not 39 anymore" birthday party which Julia and I have been organising for the past month.  We did the catering (well Julia did 90% of it) so decided to take an easy option and do curry and Julia went all out with the desserts making chocolate crackles with gold leaf, Earl Grey meringues with cream and raspberries, chocolate truffles and passionfruit jellies - she got told by the majority of the guests that she should be a professional caterer.  The party was a success although in retrospect I think Lisa might have preferred not to have one - as Julia and I pointed out we saved her having a house-warming and Craig had a great time as did we.  We got home just gone midnight to find that some neighbours in the street below were having a very rowdy party.  We had Julia and Michael with us so after each downing a Berocca we decided to go and gatecrash the party!  It's a small community and we actually knew a few of the people there so we stayed dancing until 3am - I think the last time I stayed up that late was when we were with Nate and Sarah in the Hunter Valley 2 years ago.

On Sunday we sat around the kitchen drinking vast amounts of coffee and nursing hangovers (not me luckily!) until it was time for Dad, Robert and I to go out for lunch.  I booked Ormeggio which is a lovely Northern Italian restaurant by Spit Bridge.  After some very serious deliberation we chose the Northern Italian Degustation menu with matching wines and it was magnificent - see the picture of dessert!

Tess has been doing lots of drawing recently and we thought her picture of a mouse was rather good even though her spelling wasn't!
