Tom's got Talent!!

This week has been the start of the party season in our house.  Robert's best friend, Matthew, and his girlfriend, Lucy, are in Sydney at the moment.  I've known Matthew pretty much all his life (Rob and him met at Montessori in Ealing at the age of 3) and it was fantastic to catch up with him, find out what he's done/doing with his life and to meet his very charming girlfriend.  It was a relatively tame evening given it was mid-week but it was a lot of fun.

On Wednesday it was the heats of the Kindy Talent Quest at Balgowlah Heights Primary School.  This is always a hit with all the older students because of the "cute" factor.  I didn't think Tom was going to enter but almost all the boys in his class decided to do a joint show and I persuaded him to join in.  They did a dance routine to Rock Party Anthem which they had practiced only once together but for the performance they did very well (with the mother who had choreographed the act frantically directing them from bottom centre stage!).  I managed to video the act but then discovered that our video camera, which is 11 years old, doesn't talk to our computer, which is 2 years old, and therefore we may never get to download the footage.  Guess what Jules is getting for Christmas???!!!

On Thursday night I had a kindy mum's dinner out at the new Thai restaurant up the road.  The food was excellent and the wine flowed very freely, so freely that once we left the restaurant we stumbled up to the RSL next door and stayed until the early hours.

Friday night was my work leaving dinner with my team.  The ladies chose an Italian restaurant that they are all very fond of and we had a lovely evening.  I was given an amazing balloon arrangement and a Swarovski pen.  One of the ladies, a gorgeous Scottish lady, wrote a poem to celebrate the occasion which I was very touched by and which will be the subject of a separate post.

It has been raining and miserable pretty much all week and it poured down on Friday night and all of Saturday morning.  Suddenly mid-Saturday we realised that the sun had come out so the kids and I headed down to Manly for a bike/scooter ride.  The Great Gatsby is currently being filmed at the seminary up on the hill above Manly (Leo Di Caprio is in it, amongst others, which is causing the local newspaper many thrills!) and I am convinced that one of the "crew" was doing his exercises along the promenade at Manly that afternoon.  I didn't manage to take any photos because it would have been far too obvious but imagine a black guy with his hair tied up in some sort of fabric contraption, the most impressive set of abs you've ever seen and wearing nothing but Nike trainers and the teensy, tiniest royal blue spandex undies which I can only assume were supposed to pass as running shorts.  He would sprint 100 meters along the promenade and then turn round and saunter back the way he sprinted whilst adjusting his teeny, tiny royal blue spandex undies.  He did this at least 20 times during the 20 minutes that I was sitting on the grass waiting for the children to finish playing in the playground.  It was obvious that he was causing a huge amount of amazement/amusement to all the other promenaders and to me!

Sunday was simply glorious and we headed down to nippers oblivious to Tom's objections. We're still not clear why he hates nippers so much - he's in a group with his "twin" Harry Underhill, he's a really fast runner and does very well in all the races and he always loves going in the surf - it's a mystery!!  I had not intended going into the sea but the surf was huge and Tess wanted to swim so I was obliged to - I'm so proud of my progress with trying not to be a wimpy mother!

We headed down to Clontarf for a swim and a sun bathe in the afternoon and then Jules and the kids went down to Oka to bail her out after the rainy week.  The kids love going down to the marina because Warner the old boy that drives the runaround takes them on little rides around north harbour as he putt putts around to pick up people from their boats.
