The week is running away from me so this will be brief as last week already seems a long time ago! Custard is settling in well to his new home. This is what we've learnt about Custard this week:
- one of his favourite sleeping places is the laundry basket particularly if it has clothes in it
- he's obviously attached to the children because I constantly find their dirty laundry in his bed
- despite all my attempts to keep him off the furniture and the kids bed's he continues to outwit me - last night he pushed a bar stool off the sofa so that he could make himself comfortable!
- he loves the company of other dogs and is never aggressive towards them
- I was hoping for the "hoover" model of labrador but missed out as doesn't appear to be overly interested in food
- at first Custard didn't appear to like the water but Floyd managed to convince him after a play down at Davis Marina (the two of them got on well!)
- the possums have moved out which we think is thanks to Custard as they're about the only thing he barks at.
- he likes running away. So far I've lost him once and Jules has lost him three times (mainly because Jules is braver and lets him off the lead for longer). I'm hoping that this will pass as he grows more attached to us and realises that he's now in his forever home.
This is what I've learnt about dog ownership:
- every floor and soft surface of the house contains dog fur and our light coloured carpets are frequently covered in muddy paw prints. I have to learn to live with this.
- occasionally the house smells ever so slightly of dog - I'm hoping this doesn't get worse
- my "mother guilt" now encompasses "dog guilt" as well. I don't feel I can leave the house for any length of time and I feel guilty if I sit down instead of taking Custard for an extra walk
- I'm doing a lot of walking which hopefully will have a slimming effect
- the kids love Custard - he makes them so happy and it's great to see how much they care for his welfare
- Custard follows me everywhere as I potter around the house and is a brilliant companion - it's like he's always been part of our house

Tess' netball team had a Gala Day on Sunday starting at 7.45am (which was a bit rude after a 6.45am start the previous day for rugby) but fortunately it was a gloriously sunny day, lots of Tess' friends were also at the courts and her team ended up being the undefeated champions of their division. In the evening the Wakes-Millers came round for dinner and to meet Custard who got a big thumbs up!
We lodged a development application (DA) with Manly Council to undertake some renovations on our house which include adding two bedrooms with en-suites downstairs, redoing the upstairs deck and putting in a downstairs deck, raising the ceiling in the upstairs sitting room and replacing the carport. It will be fantastic once it's done but still a while to go.
