Safer beaches

Since late January Jules has spent every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning studying for his bronze life saving medallion.  It's been a huge commitment but he's met some lovely people and really enjoyed it.  He had the theory exam a couple of weeks ago which all went smoothly.  Below is what happened during the mock-practical exam:

Imagine a squad training for their Bronze Medallion and practicing a scenario on the beach when suddenly there are screams for help in the surf.
Well, Manly LSC instructors Lauren Elder and Gemma Margiotta were putting six trainees through their paces last Wednesday at Manly Beach in preparation for their wet exam on Saturday.
''We heard screams from the northern end of the beach. It was about 7pm and starting to get dark,'' Lauren said.
''A man, a 26-year-old Irishman, was caught in a rip and about 40m out and yelling for assistance.
''A board rider from Argentina paddled to him and three of our guys swam to him. We had the oxygen ready. When we got him back to the beach, we put on the oxygen immediately and monitored his condition before friends took him to hospital.
''We followed up his condition the next day.''
Lauren said all the trainees did their part and it proved to be a great outcome.

Fittingly, they all passed their Bronze on Saturday!
