Sawtell and Crescent Head

The kids have just had 2 weeks of school holidays and we spent the first week at nippers camp in Sawtell followed by a week relaxing on the beach at Crescent Head.  Sadly Jules had to work but he was able to fly up to Sawtell for Tess' birthday and spend 2 days with us before flying out to Singapore.

Dodgy birthday cake but I attempted the shape of a T.....
The weather in Sawtell was pretty dreadful although you can't really tell from the photos.  It was blowing a gale the entire time, there was a 3-4 metre swell which meant the kids were quite restricted with what they could do in the water and it was really quite cold.  We stayed in a cabin in the caravan park and I was much happier once I discovered the heating system!  Tom had a ball with all his nipper friends and luckily there were plenty of girls for Tess to hang out with so she was happy too.

The weather began to improve once we got to Crescent Head and by the end of the week the temperatures were constantly in the high 20s which was perfect beach weather.  Crescent Head is well known for it's surf break off the point and Tom enjoyed spending a fair amount of time surfing although he was also keen to hang out with his mates Ewan and Josh.

The kids and I shared a house with the Rivers which worked very well as the 4 kids are great together and although Tom is the only boy he enjoys Sienna's company.  In fact the 2 of them used to have lunch together every day on our deck whilst sharing the binoculars and chatting about their morning at the beach.

There are a lot of local families who go up to Crescent for that week and we quickly fell into a great routine which involved beach in the morning, relaxing early afternoon at home, late afternoon activity which ranged from touch rugby on the beach to netball, basketball, soccer and french cricket, and finally an evening meal.

One afternoon we decided to explore some of the nearby beaches to find a better place to surf - as the weather improved the surf died down - and ended up at Queen's beach.  We drove onto the beach and parked at one end whilst the kids surfed.  On the way back Scott Burgess' car got bogged in sand and then mine did too.  We managed to dig and push them out.  Scott's then got bogged in the only passage that allowed us access off the beach.  Whilst he was being helped I got bogged again and began to get a bit freaked out because I was close to the shore line and the tide was rising.  Once again I got dug and pushed out.  This time I talked serious tactics with the other Land Rover driver and we agreed that we basically needed to gun it up the beach once the passageway was clear.  With my heart in my mouth I headed at 60 kilometres an hour towards the passageway.  As I got close to the entrance I had to keep my speed higher than I was comfortable with and I was scared of all the children around watching from the sand banks because I was clearly not in control and the car could have easily swerved in a strange direction.  Thank goodness I made it but meanwhile another of our party had got bogged down on the beach.  He was well and truly bogged and the digging and pushing wasn't helping but a local in a serious car, probably with his tyres let down, turned up and used a snatch strap to get him out.  I had a few glasses of wine in quite quick succession once we finally got home but we all loved the adventure!
