Lisa and I went to the Van Gogh Alive exhibition this week. It's a new style of exhibition where you go into a large room with lots of floor-to-ceiling screens and the works of the artist are projected onto the screens. They tell the story of the artist's life purely through the images, with a few screens of words to set the scene and a lovely soundtrack. Some of the screens show close ups of the paintings and some of the paintings are animated. For example, a windmill in one of the paintings was turning and the water in "Starry Night over the Rhone" rippled. I've read articles saying that this is the new way of viewing art and I can see that with the younger generation who have a poor attention span and like moving images this would be more appealing than walking around an art gallery. The quality of the images is amazing and you can definitely appreciate the 3D element of oil on canvas so even for someone who likes walking around art galleries you do feel as if you're getting closer to the paintings.
I hadn't considered the fact that we were in an indoor space with lots of strangers during the time of Corona but luckily Lisa came well prepared with masks for us both. After the exhibition we continued with the French theme and had galettes and kir royale for lunch!
