Tuesday was Melbourne Cup day - "the race that stops a nation". It's a horse race held down in Melbourne which lasts approximately 3 minutes and is a state holiday in Victoria and causes all Sydney offices to shut down between 2.45 and 3.15 whilst people go to their nearest pubs to watch the race - inexplicable! It was also the hottest Sydney day since January 18th with temperatures still around 37 degrees at 6 in the evening. Jules was standing on the deck drinking a beer when he noticed what looked like a tail hanging down from a bunch of dried leaves and twigs. Armed with the bbq tongs he proceeded to prod the tail and eventually the furry bottom it was attached to until the possum squeaked. The possum was obviously very affronted by the poking and has taken up residence elsewhere!
I received a big promotion at work this week and my new title is Business Support Manager. I've basically gone from having 1 person to manage to a team of about 10 which includes Customer Service, Inventory and a Business Analyst. I have quite mixed feelings about it all - on one hand I was very lucky that my job was essentially a bit like a hobby but occasionally it did bother me that I didn't have a career. Now I have a career but I'm worried about the potential stress that might go with it - I don't have time for stress and I'm already considering giving up the band as I just don't have time to practice - we'll see.
Jules did a big ocean race this weekend on St Jude which is the longest race (180 nautical miles) they'll have prior to the Sydney-Hobart but it was still less than 3 times the distance of the Sydney-Hobart (628 nautical miles assuming you go in a straight line)! The boat left at 8pm on Friday night and they immediately adopted a 4 hour watch system - they got back in at 8pm on the Saturday night which as far as I could work out was at least 6 hours earlier than they had expected. Jules got home at 9.30pm took a long hot shower and fell into a very deep sleep!
On Saturday the kids had swim class followed by a play date with a friend of Tess' from school. After some craft and cake baking in the afternoon we went round to the Mennies for a swim in their new pool. We're missing having the Mennies next door but the new house is sensational and I'm very happy to hang out there feeling like a rock star!
On Sunday we decided to go to the zoo and check on the baby elephant. It was a slightly drizzly day which is always best for seeing the animals as they are more active. In the afternoon the Wakes-Millers came round for tea and cake - I took the opportunity to try out potential cake recipes for Tom's birthday cake next weekend - I think I've found one!
