Long weekend at the Farm

We've just come back from another excellent long weekend at the Farm with the usual suspects the Mennies and the Jamiesons. This weekend's activity came from Michael and involved building a billy-cart - for the kids allegedly. I say allegedly because I think they were allowed 2 turns each and then the big boys took over finding the steepest hills possible, despite Michael's badly sprained ankle, and hurtling down them at break-neck speed! The kids went back to using their plastic bikes instead.

We can tell the kids are growing up because we see them less and less at the farm. This trip they made quite a big advance and were constantly heading down, on their own (although Floyd was their constant shadow), to the bottom paddock where they played in the long grass for hours. In fact, in the car on the way home Tess said that one of her favourite things was heading off exploring whilst "the adults stay in the house" - guess what, we liked it too!

Food, as always, played a very important part of the weekend with chicken curry, cheese fondue and slow-cooked lamb in the camp oven on the menu. Michael has attempted this particular lamb dish 3 times previously with varying degrees of success. This time we attempted a completely different approach and instead of burying the camp oven in the ground surrounded by coals where it maintains temperatures of 250 degrees, we tried putting it on a grill above the fire where we could maintain a more moderate temperature. It was a great success and we will be doing it again. Another revelation was that the kids love bacon and egg rolls - see the picture above with 4 of them tucking into their rolls with gusto!

Below is a video of Tess' first attempt on the billy-cart complete with concerned mother commentary.
