Tom had a runny nose at the beginning of the week which flared up his asthma. This is nothing unusual but he also complained of a sore throat so I phoned his school to ask them what they would like me to do and they said they would feel more comfortable if he got tested for Covid-19. I took him up to the local hospital which is incredibly well set up - there's a separate car park, you register upon arrival and then wait in your car until it's your turn to be tested. The test itself is unpleasant with a large swab stuck far up your nose and Tom was a little taken aback by that. We got the results less than 24 hours later with Tom given the all clear.
Another good reason to get tested is that Tom is having surgery on Monday to remove one of the tumours in his left femur caused by fibrous dysplasia. We discovered back in March that his left femur was once again broken and we now need to remove the tumour, put in a bone graft and secure the area with a metal plate. The X-ray's below show how quickly the break has grown in the past 4 months - incredible that Tom has been walking around, surfing, bike riding with his leg like that and not complaining of any pain. He will be in hospital for 2 nights and on crutches for 6 weeks so quite a quick recovery time. I'm quietly freaking out although I know it will all be fine - it's so horrible to think of your children having surgery.
Cath is the first of my friends to turn 50 this year. Because of the Coronavirus birthday parties have been disrupted and put on hold but we managed a birthday brunch so that we could give her her presents.
My veggie patch is coming along nicely and I was delighted to harvest 3 tiny radishes during the week. They tasted delicious but we're clearly not going to be self-sufficient any time soon!
