Disco Fever!

It's been a particularly hectic week for me work wise and the only way I've muddled through is with amazing amounts of help from Jules and Emma with school drop off and pick up.  We had our first Parent Teacher meeting on Wednesday evening which was a chance for the teacher to meet all the parents and tell them about her approach to teaching etc.  We really like Tess' teacher so it was all good.  After the meeting we went out for dinner with Ken and Emma which we haven't done in a long time and it felt hugely decadent going out for dinner to a nice restaurant mid-week.  We got back at around 9.30 and whilst I dropped the babysitter back home Jules went and checked on the kids only to find that Tom had rubbed an entire pot of Vicks Vapour Rub into his hair!!  Tom slept through 2 very thorough hair washes but the next morning you wouldn't have known that we'd washed his hair it was still so greasy so I put him in the bath and washed his hair 2 more times although it really didn't seem to make much difference.  If you get close to him you can still catch a whiff of the Vicks and I don't think his room will ever smell of anything else!

Since Tess has started school I've been piling on the guilt about being a working mother and worrying that all the other mums at school are stay at home and give their children amazing amounts of attention.  This week I discovered that the vast majority of the mums in Tess' class work at least 4 days a week and it is incredible the difference that has made to me.  Every conversation I have with these mums is about before and after school care, when to fit in homework, how to work and run a household and how exhausting starting school is - it's fantastic and has made me feel a million times better!

Tess had her first school birthday party on Saturday morning and the standard for parties has been set incredibly high.  The theme for the party was Ben 10 which I believe is some type of alien cartoon character.  The entertainer at the party had all the children doing amazing science experiments with all the mums desperate to join in, she then did dancing games followed by a treasure hunt and the finale was being given green slime - I saw all the mums thinking of their white sofas and carpets and shuddering!

The dancing in the morning was just a warm up for the Wakes-Miller joint disco in the afternoon.  They had hired out the local hall and there must have been at least 60 children.  The DJ was incredible - he had the full kit of smoke machine, lights and bubble machine - and he looked like he was having a ball - the kids did not stop moving for a full 2 hours.  I was tempted to try a few dance moves myself but didn't want to embarrass Tess and Tom.

After all the excitement we had a very quiet Sunday although the kids braved the pool in the afternoon - we've had 2 weeks of rain so the pool has dropped to about 24 degrees but the kids didn't seem to notice.
